Do you need to warm up your motorcycle before riding it?

Most motorcycle riders drive directly after starting the motorcycle. It should be noted that the engine needs to be warmed up, which will prolong the life of the engine.

Usually, after the motorcycle is left overnight, the oil will flow back into the crankcase, and the pistons and piston rings are basically not lubricated by oil. If you start the car immediately after starting, the cylinder head part will lack enough lubricating oil. It will immediately enter the working condition and cause the combustion chamber to heat up rapidly. In this way, it is very easy to cause the wear and tear of the piston ring of the middle cylinder piston, which makes the piston seal insufficient, causing the cylinder head to burn oil and the power to drop. What’s more serious is that if you don’t pay attention to checking the oil, it may cause the oil to dry out seriously and cause the cylinder to pull. Especially for old cars with more than 10,000 kilometers, because the oil pump in the old car’s engine is worn, the idling preheated oil will not be delivered to the lubricated parts.

Whether a motorcycle is fuel-efficient is closely related to the degree of atomization of the fuel. The better the atomization, the more fully burned, and the lower the fuel consumption. The temperature of the preheated combustion chamber is higher, and the flammable mixture entering the combustion chamber is further atomized by its volatility, so that the fuel can exert a higher efficiency. In an unheated engine, there is almost no such “further atomization” effect.

The purpose of preheating is to let the oil lubricate the various parts and make the engine temperature reach the working temperature, of which lubrication is the most important. When we start the engine, when the oil has not been pumped from the oil pan, the engine will be damaged because only some parts are lubricated, but the time is very short, only about one-tenth of a second.

If the warm-up time is too short, it will be damaged because the oil has not sufficiently lubricated the entire engine. On the contrary, if the warm-up time is too long, in addition to wasting gasoline, it will also cause oil and gas to be mixed into the crankcase or incompletely burned gasoline to form carbon particles mixed in the oil, which will accelerate the deterioration of the oil and make the cylinder head , piston, valve and other carbon deposits.

After warming up the car, drive about 1 km at a speed of no more than 40 km per hour. The purpose of this is to let the engine reach the working temperature and keep the car in the best condition at any time.

So preheating the motorcycle is a must, no matter how steady your car is idling. Do not use the stability of the idling speed to determine whether the warm-up is complete. Usually, the viscosity of the oil decreases in summer, and the warm-up time is 2-3 minutes. The engine speed should be controlled between 1500-2000 rpm.
